Soul of the Sky:
Exploring the Human Side of Weather
The Mount Washington Observatory and the National Science Foundation wanted to increase public understanding of weather. They curated a collection of short pieces written by well-known authors such as Diane Ackerman, Annie Dillard, and Sebastian Junger, as well as the work of talented unknowns.
Veteran illustrator Paul Breeden (Smithsonian, National Geographic) created an image for each chapter opening, based on his reaction to the story. He also created the cover painting, using colors that he ground by hand from natural minerals, earth colors and organic pigments.
In this opening illustration, for a story about a family with a snow-plowing business, Paul captured perfectly the hypnotic effect of driving into snow at night.
